3. What is a cookie

Cookies are small strings of text that the sites visited by the user send to the browser on the user's computer, where they are stored and then sent back to the same sites when the same user accesses the site at some later stage. When browsing on a site, the user can receive "first party" cookies on their computer. "First party" cookies are managed directly by the site owner and/or manager. The user may also receive cookies sent by different sites or web servers (so called "third party" cookies); this happens because the website visited may contain elements that reside on different servers from that hosting the website. In other words, these are cookies that are set up by a website that is not the one you are currently visiting.

There are three different types of cookies:

- Technical cookies: only used to enable the website to operate correctly;

- Analytic cookies: used to collect aggregate information mainly of a statistical nature;

- Profiling cookies: these are designed to create user profiles to be used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences they reveal while browsing on the web.
