dive into B!POD
Here at B!POD, we're passionate about reducing pollution and minimising our environmental impact, so each of our products was developed with the planet in mind.
Created from carefully selected materials chosen for food safety and minimal environmental impact, all our containers are created using ocean-bound plastics recovered from rivers and oceans. This means that when you invest in one of our starter packs, you're doing your bit in the fight against plastic pollution.
Ocean-bound plastics can be defined as any discarded plastic waste found in coastal communities where formal waste management is non-existent or mismanaged. This could include plastic waste found in waterways, on shorelines, or waste found within 50km of the ocean.
Mostly non-commercially recyclable waste, plastics make up an estimated 80% of all the waste in the ocean. There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste estimated to be in our oceans and seas. 269,000 tons float, and 4 billion microfibers per km² dwell below the surface. 70% of our debris sinks into the ocean's ecosystem, 15% floats, and 15% lands on our beaches (link).
Every year there are 8.3 million tons of plastic discarded into our oceans, of which there are some 236,000 microplastics. These microplastics are often mistaken for food by marine life, and as plastics cannot be digested by them, they are regularly consuming microplastics. And if they’re not eating the plastic, they’re being trapped in bits of packaging or harmed by sharp plastic edges. Over 500 marine locations are now recorded as dead zones. These dead zones are currently the same size as the entire United Kingdom. This means that 245,000 km² of our ocean is so deprived of oxygen that no life can exist there. Due to our plastic pollution, we’ve created vast uninhabitable areas that were once bountiful with marine life.
Plastic can take 500 years to degrade in the ocean. Even something as seemingly small as a grocery or ziplock bag can take twenty years to fully decompose in the ocean. Larger objects, like plastic bottles or fishing equipment, can take up to 600 years to fully disintegrate.
90% of the worldwide ocean debris comes from just 10 rivers. By intervening whilst plastic waste is at this stage, we could halt the flow of plastic waste to our oceans and prevent further damage to our fragile environment. So think before you litter, and think of B!POD when you’re ready to invest in positive environmental impact.
To celebrate our oceans and our commitment to using ocean-bound plastics, we’re offering 20% off our starter pack and 20% off the container set, plus a donation to one of our ocean charities.
